What is Code Hack?

Code Hack is a healthcare-focused hackathon where participants identify, design, prototype, and pitch innovative solutions to benefit patients, caregivers, and the healthcare system. A hackathon is an event where people collaborate to develop solutions to specific challenges. At Code Hack, participants have a weekend to pitch healthcare challenges, form teams, and work together to create potential solutions. The goal is to collaboratively improve healthcare by addressing local challenges and developing actionable solutions.

When and where is Code Hack happening?

Code Hack is happening on March 7–9, 2025, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital campus in Victoria, BC. You can find more details in the event schedule.

Who can participate in Code Hack?

You don’t need to know how to code, work in healthcare, or have any specific background. The event is open to anyone 16 years and older who is passionate about improving healthcare.

Is there a cost to participate?

No, there is no cost to participate in Code Hack.

What is the structure of the event?

The first step happens online two weeks before the event when participants submit, discuss and vote on challenges they have observed in the healthcare system. Early in the weekend, selected challenges are pitched and teams are formed. Now, the hackathon begins. The teams (comprising 5–6 members) have 24 hours to brainstorm, prototype, and refine their solutions. Teams work intensively to develop their ideas, culminating in a pitch to a panel of judges. For a more detailed schedule of the weekend, see the event schedule.

Do I need to suggest a healthcare challenge?

Yes, all participants must submit and be prepared to pitch a healthcare challenge they’ve identified. These ideas will serve as the foundation for the projects teams will work on during the event. Approximately 15 pitches will go forward to be worked on by the teams following the voting process.

What kinds of solutions can participants create?

The possibilities are endless! Solutions could include a care pathway or workflow, new signage or a website, an app or digital tool, improvements for treatment rooms, or any other idea your team decides to work on.

What happens if we win?

Winners will receive cash prizes and the opportunity to further develop their ideas with Island Health’s Innovation Lab and other community partners.
